Amritsar, March 18

Several armed persons opened fire at two youths near the Tarn Taran bypass road here on Saturday evening. Identified as Sajan and Tinku, the victims have sustained splinter injuries. They were rushed to the Civil Hospital.

The prime suspect is Baljit Singh, alias Raja, of Bhai Manjh Singh Road. He suspected that a brother of Sajan used to tease his sister, a school student. The police have registered an attempt to murder and snatching case against six persons, five of whom are yet to be identified.

Sanju, brother of the victim, stated to the police that on Saturday evening they were present at home when his elder brother Tinku got a call from someone who started threatening and using abusive language. The caller asked him to meet them at a flat near the Tarn Taran bypass road. He said though his brother tried to convince the caller that there might be some misunderstanding, the accused did not relent.

Tinku, along with his brother Sajan and friend Rajan, went to the spot where six persons came on two bikes. One of them had a double barrel gun while others were equipped with sharp weapons. They accused the complainant’s brother, Aditya, of teasing Baljit’s sister. A brawl took place. In the melee, the accused fired at Tinku and Sajan, who sustained bullet injuries. The accused fled away on seeing blood oozing out of the victims’ wounds. They also snatched their bike.

Ashwani Kumar, investigating officer, said raids were on to nab the suspects. Further investigation is under progress, he added.
