City-based educational institutions organised a number of activities to observe the International Day of Disabled Persons here on Tuesday.
Students of Bhavan’s SL Public School took part in a special assembly. The students shared their thoughts with everyone to promote awareness about the people with disabilities.
Raman of Bhavan’s Muskan School, a school run by the management of Bhavan’s SL Public School for children with down syndrome, presented a motivational song and other Bhavan’s Muskan students also gave a dance performance which enhanced their confidence and helped them to perform better in their life-long activities.
The student also celebrated the birth anniversary of Dr Rajendra Prasad and enlightened them with the ideals of his life. The assembly revolved around one thought that was “Hard things are put in our way not to stop us but to call out our courage and strength.”
On the occasion, World Disability Week celebrations at Spring Dale Senior School commenced in the school premises. Holding hands, or ferrying them in their wheelchairs, students led their special counterparts to the school playground where they participated in an inclusive walk with them. An activity titled ‘Walking in their shoes’ that required the healthy students to step into the shoes of their differently-abled counterparts was held through the week.
Consequently, all through the week, Spring Daleans from different classes were seen walking around the premises blindfolded, gagged, their legs tied and arms bandaged and with their friends acting as helpers and guides to try and feel what their friends with distinctive needs experience on being deprived of physical, intellectual and material assets available to their other schoolmates.
Tuesday was observed as ‘Mute Day’, hence teachers and students were seen communicating in sign language, which was also used to perform the national anthem. Students also staged a skit to support the cause of the challenges faced by the children with special needs and the need to promote inclusive education.
