Amritsar, January 17

With the visit of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh and other senior Congress leaders to Delhi, local leaders and party activists are now hopeful about the announcement regarding mayor for the city.

District Congress (Urban) president Jugal Kishore Sharma said the announcement was possible anytime after a meeting of the Punjab Congress leaders with the high command.

He said, “A meeting of senior leaders from the state was held in New Delhi today. Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, Punjab Congress in-charge Asha Kumari, PPCC chief Sunil Jakhar and other leaders discussed about the names at the meeting. A meeting of state leaders with party high command is scheduled for tomorrow. The mayor’s name for the city will be announced within a day or two.”

There are more than half a dozen councillors are in race for mayorship. Every one is making efforts using his links with senior leaders to bag the plum position. Some of them have even approached Rahul Gandhi, president, All India Congress Committee, say sources.

“Every one has the right to make efforts for any position. Councillors are trying for it. We held a meeting after the elections and left it on Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s shoulder to decide on the mayor. We will welcome party’s decision,” said Jugal Kishore.

The local leadership did not suggest any name to the state leadership. “We are eagerly waiting for the announcement on the mayor,” said a councillor.
