Day after NRI couple robbed, one held, accomplice on run

AMRITSAR: A day after a purse containing gold ornaments was snatched from a New Zealand-based NRI couple, the police on Friday claimed to have solved the case by arresting a youth in this regard.

A day after a purse containing gold ornaments was snatched from a New Zealand-based NRI couple, the police on Friday claimed to have solved the case by arresting a youth in this regard.  He was identified as Ashu Pandit, a resident of Hathi gate area. His accomplice Mohit Kumar of Godam Mohalla was yet to be arrested. The police have also recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 7.5 lakh, Rs 6,000 cash and a stolen motorcycle from his possession.

Unknown motorcycle-borne persons had snatched a purse of an NRI woman that contained gold ornaments, a mobile phone and Rs 6,000 in cash. Sunil Joshi, a resident of Auckland, New Zealand, in his complaint, told the police that he, along with his wife, was going towards Queens’ Road from Darbar Sahib on e-rickshaw. When they were about to reach Bhandari Bridge, two motorcycle-borne persons snatched the purse of his wife, he said. 

Deputy Commissioner of Police (investigations) Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar told mediapersons that both the suspects had six cases of robbery each registered against them. They used to target tourists and NRIs going towards Railway station from Golden Temple on e-rickshaw.

Bhullar said during interrogation, the police have solved around 15 snatching cases that occurred in the past three months. The interrogation of the suspect had led to seizure of 15 mobile phones from his possession. He said efforts were being made to raid Mohit Kumar. 

In the meanwhile, the police nabbed two snatchers identified as Prince Singh alias Mota and Sajan and recovered two snatched mobile phones and a stolen bike from their possession. The suspects had also confessed to committing another snatching in Division A police station area here.
