An altercation following a minor collision of two cars took an ugly turn when one of the car-borne persons allegedly opened fire that hit a policeman, who tried to intervene.

The victim has been identified as, Ravinderjit Singh, who is posted at the arms and licensing branch in the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police here. He is under treatment at a private hospital in the Putlighar area.

Meanwhile, DCP J Elanchazian reached the spot and started investigation.

An eyewitness said a person riding on a Nissan Sunny car bearing registration No. PBO2CV5775 had a dispute with youth identified as, Sikander Singh, who was driving a Maruti Suzuki Dzire car. During the altercation, Ravinderjit who was passing from the spot, stopped and tried to intervene. In the meantime, persons travelling in Nissan Sunny fired three shots from a weapon one of which hit Ravinderjit. He was rushed to a hospital while unidentified suspects fled away.

Later, it was found that the car was registered in the name of Gurpinder Singh of the Chheharta area. The DCP said investigation was in progress and accused were yet to be identified.
