Amritsar, July 13

The Amritsar rural police have arrested a head constable for “corruption” and “threatening a youth to register a false case” under the NDPS Act against him. He has been identified as Charan Singh. Sukhwinder Singh of Udoke village had lodged a complaint with SSP (Rural) Parampal Singh that Head Constable Charan Singh had taken Rs 40,000 from him after threatening to implicate him in false cases under NDPS Act.

The SSP marked a probe to SP (Investigations) Harpal Singh who recommended registration of an FIR against him, following which Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and Section 506 of the IPC were slapped on him by the Mattewal police.

The SSP said Jandiala DSP had been asked to probe the case further. The accused was produced in the court which sent him to three-day police remand.

Parampal Singh said the state government and the police had adopted a zero tolerance against drug traffickers. “The police officials have been directed to take stern action against drug smugglers, but it doesn’t mean that anyone can indulge in corrupt practices and implicate innocent persons in false cases. This will not be tolerated. If we found any cop indulging in such a practice, he will have to face the music,” he added.
