Tarn Taran: A farm labourer, Baljit Kaur who was 38, was run over by a combine-harvester in her village Margindpur, 35 kilometer from here on Thursday. The Bhikhiwind police have registered a case under sections 304-A, 279 of the IPC against the driver of the combine. Gurchet Singh, husband of the deceased, who too was present on the spot, said his wife was collecting straw from the field when the driver reversed the combine and ran over Baljit Kaur.  The accused absconded from the spot. — OC

1 booked for stealing canal water

Randhir Singh, a farmer of village Bania, 30 kilometer from here has been booked under sections 379, 430, 427 of the IPC by the Goindwal Sahib police for stealing canal water. Rayya SDO, sub- division of the irrigation department in a written complaint to the police alleged that the accused farmers steal canal water from the distributory of village Bhinder on August 24 and irrigated his fields when the officials of the department collected evidence by visiting the spot. The case has been registered on Thursday, told police.— OC

1 dead, another hurt in mishap 

Tarn Taran: One person died while the pillion rider received injuries when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by another rashly driven motorocycle near Patti township on late Thursday evening.The Patti Sadar police have registered a case under Sections 304 A, 337, 338, 279 and 427 of the IPC against Sukhdev Singh of Bhaggupur village. The deceased has been identified as Gurpreet Singh (25) of Bhaghupur village, whereas the injured was identified as Bohar Singh. OC

Vends to remain closed 

Amritsar: Deputy Commissioner Kamaldeep Singh Sangha has declared that vends in the 3-km area of the district, bordering along Gurdaspur, where votes for the Lok Sabha byelection will be counted, will remain closed till 5 pm on October 15. TNS
