Celebrations in GNDU as MAKA trophy arrives

AMRITSAR: Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) was abuzz with celebrations as the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy reached its premises after a gap of six years on Thursday.

Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) was abuzz with celebrations as the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy reached its premises after a gap of six years on Thursday. The trophy was received by players, coaches, principals of affiliated colleges and sports officials of the university in presence of Vice-Chancellor Prof Jaspal Singh Sandhu.

The trophy was brought to the university campus in a decked up open jeep by sports officials and players of international repute, led by a number of students celebrating the victory.

Prof Sandhu said, “As the Vice-Chancellor, I can facilitate only infrastructure, but in reality it is the hard work of sports authorities, players and colleges of the university. We must ensure to maintain the standard. We must celebrate and prepare ourselves for future. This remains one of the memorable moments of my life. Guru Nanak Dev University is committed to uplift its sports status by providing maximum facilities.”

GNDU Sports Director Dr Sukhdev Singh said, “The university has tasted success under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor. We hope to claim this trophy next year as well. This is the 23rd time we lifted the trophy.”

Lakshya, silver medalist in Asian Games shooting, and Bhanu Pratap, bronze medalist in Wushu in Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia, Meghana Sajjanakar, shooting gold medalist in World University Games 2018, Babita Devi and Jyotika Dutta, who participated in fencing in Asian Games were present on the occasion. They were honoured by GNDU officials.

The GNDU received 1,07,745 points to break the six-year stranglehold of Punjabi University, Patiala.
