CBSE to hold Reading Week from today

The CBSE has asked its affiliated schools to hold a Reading Week from 9th to 15th September.

The move has been announced as part of celebrations of International Literacy Day on September 8. The International Literacy Day is a day to reflect upon literacy rates, challenges of the world. The CBSE is holding reading week to promote reading habits among students.

A week-long celebration will see educational institutions holding multiple activities, circulation of the guidelines on management and use of library among all schools, donate a book campaign. The activities carried out by students during the Reading Week can be assessed as part of the subject enrichment activities for classes up to secondary level.

Besides, the education board, officials of the district education authorities have been collecting books under a campaign, ‘Kitaba Da Langar’, Deputy DEO (Elementary) initiated by Rekha Mahajan. She has distributed 1,500 books of primary subjects to government schools.

The residents are requested to donate books from Classes I to XII in any language to government school libraries and schools.

Rekha Mahajan said, “The school libraries must be filled with books, especially of primary section. Now, I will be distributing books to Classes VI onwards. I am trying to distribute books as per their level of understanding.”

The district library has also been conducting multiple activities to motivate residents towards reading. Recently, Sarbat Library was opened at the District TB Hospital for patients. The library has been dedicated to the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

“Reading book must be cultivated at a young age. Reading helps to form a perspectives, advances their language skills. Such week celebrations can at least develop interest of children,” said Shobha, a parent.
