Amritsar: Players of St Soldier Elite Convent School, Jandiala, won 31 medals in the groups U-14, U-17 and U-19 in the CBSE school games held in Jalandhar. Girls and boys of the U-14 group won the overall trophy and the group of U-17 and U-19 won the runner-up trophy. Harnoor Kaur (long jump), Amarjit Singh, Anmoldeep, Jagroop Singh, Karanbir Singh and Mehakdeep Singh (relay 4*100) won gold medals in the competition.

Seminar on road safety 

As a part of a campaign to create road safety rules’ awareness among students on the World Students’ Day, DAV Public School organised a seminar for students of Classes IX and X on its premises recently. A team of Traffic Police comprising Harjit Singh Dhaliwal, ADCP Traffic, Hardyal Singh, ACP Traffic, Paramjit Singh, Sub-Inspector, Surinder Pal Singh, Traffic Marshal and Harjinder Singh, Traffic Marshal, visited the school and shared the valuable information on road safety rules. They told students about the road safety strategies which had to be followed for their safety and for others’ safety. 

Parkash Utsav celebrated 

The Parkash Utsav of Sri Guru Ram Das Ji was celebrated on the premises of Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School, Nawan Pind, today. The programme began with the recitation of Sri Sukhmani Sahib. A Class IX student Harmeet Kaur threw light on biography of Sri Guru Ram Das. The Class V student, Khushnoor Kaur, recited “Mool Mantra”. The Class VII student, Akashdeep Singh, recited the shabad “Tera kita jato nahi”. Bhai Paramjit Singh mesmerised the audience with Gurbani kirtan. Principal of the school talked about life history of the fourth Sikh master, Sri Guru Ram Das. He exhorted students to follow true values and path of the life. Students were felicitated by the Principal and teachers on the occasion. The participants partook “Guru ka Langar” after the programme. 

Group song contest

An inter-school national group song competition was organised by Bharat Vikas Parishad, Amritsar Central, at Modern Jagat Jyoti School, Jaura Phatak, today. The president of Bharat Vikas Parishad, Prof HS Walia, welcomed the chief guest, Suresh Mahajan, chairman of the Amritsar Improvement Trust, on the occasion. In his Inaugural address, Mahajan emphasised on the need to organise such competitions for holistic development of students personality. Principal of Jagat Jyoti School, Sumit Puri, elaborated on objectives of Bharat Vikas Parishad and its key areas of focus. The chief guest of the valedictory session, Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, Inspector General (vigilance), gave away prizes to winning teams.

Spring Daleans win laurels 

Students of Spring Dale School have stated in a finding that the soil of Malwa belt of Punjab has the highest concentration of heavy metals, which are cancerous in nature, and are responsible for the spread of cancer in the state. The fact came to the fore during interactions that the students of classes VII and VIII held with farmers of the Majha and Malwa belt of Punjab, in fulfillment of a project titled, ‘Cancer in Punjab’. The project was awarded to them by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India for the National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC) 2016 held at The Millennium School, Amritsar. Besides interacting with farmers, the budding scientists from Spring Dales collected soil and water samples from Majha and Malwa regions and got the same tested to substantiate their study. They were surprised to find a heavy concentration of heavy metals in the soil collected from the Malwa region. Their research helped them bag the first position in the NCSC 2016, which witnessed the participation of 30 teams from different schools. Giving details, Rajiv Kumar Sharma, Principal, Spring Dale Senior School, said that the school team comprising five members, all students of Classes VII and VIII, competed with participants from 30 teams from different schools. “Our team was assigned the topic ‘Cancer in Punjab’. They presented the topic through power point presentations and charts,” he said. 

Shabad Gayan contest

The local Shabad Gayan team bagged first place in the state- level Shabad singing contest in the primary wing category, held on the premises of Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, today. Teams of Hoshiarpur and Roopnagar stood second and third, respectively, in the competition. The competition was held to mark the 50th anniversary of Punjabi Suba. — TNS
