The college admissions season has officially begun, many academicians feel more and more students seem to be preferring study abroad.

Many city-based educationists claim career is key motivator for students choosing to study abroad. Better employment prospects and work experience during and after their study is also among the major reasons for foreign study.

Dr Mehal Singh, Principal, Khalsa College, said, “The trend among students to go abroad has gone up due to better employment opportunities. Naturally, the admissions are impacted as state youth is not willing to study here. Our college has started offering multiple specialised courses. ”

Swaraj Grover, educationist-cum-social activist, said, “The education system needs a big overhaul. We need job opportunities as even engineers and doctors are unemployed. Parents invest high amounts of money on their children’s education but there are no jobs as a result both parents and children are looking abroad as an option.”

Almost all colleges have been getting affected with many of them claiming fall in admissions this time, PK Sharma, Principal, Hindu College, said, “The trend has increased in the last few years. Students are choosing IELTS training institutes over colleges.”

Rajesh Kumar, Principal, DAV College, stresses on qualified faculty, up gradation of education system to attract students back home as many tend to leave further in absence of it.
