Tarn Taran: The Goindwal Sahib police have booked five members of a family in a dowry case. The police said the accused had been identified as Ranjit Singh, his father Gurvel Singh, mother Harjit Kaur, sister Karamjit Kaur and brother Surjit Singh of Mughal Chakk Gillan village. Complainant Sharandip Kaur stated to the police that she was married to Ranjit Singh around one-and-a-half year ago. She alleged that her in-laws harassed her for dowry and demanded Rs 14 lakh to send her abroad. On May 27, the accused allegedly forced her out of the house, she alleged. The police have registered a case under Sections 406, 498-A, and 506 of the IPC. OC

Padma Shri awardee's GNDU lecture

Amritsar: Padma Shri awardee academician and scholar, Prof ED Jemmis from the Department of Chemistry, IISC, Bangalore, delivered a lecture at the GNDU's chemistry wing. In his lecture, Prof. Jemmis threw light on the newly discovered allotropies of Boron and borophenes. He drew analogies between benzene and graphenes and borophenes. The latter had promising role in new age, high temperature semiconductors. Renowned in the field of theoretical chemistry and a Princeton graduate, he is a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize winner and fellow at the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World and a recipient of the Prof T Navaneeth Rao National Best Teacher Award. He has guided 20 PhD students and has more than 200 research articles published in the journals of international repute.
