Civic body collects Rs 11.52 lakh from liquor vends

AMRITSAR: To increase revenue and utilise its resources, the estate wing of the Municipal Corporation (MC) has started recovering occupational charges from liquor vends in MC booths or shops. The MC collects Rs 2.88 lakh as annual charge from a liquor vend. In the first phase, the MC has identified four liquor vends operational in its properties. Rs 11.52 lakh has been charged from two contractors. Estate Officer Sushant Bhatia said, “We have a  provision to collect the charges from liquor vends. We will identify the  restaurants alongside liquor vends and charge them.” TNS

Tile work inaugurated

Amritsar: The installation of interlocking tiles on footpaths alongside Majithia Road was inaugurated by Mayor Karamjit Singh and MLA Sunil Dutti at SSSS Chowk on Saturday morning. The footpath was dug last year to install gas pipeline. While addressing mediapersons, Rintu said the Congress government was making efforts for urban development. “We have assured 100 per cent development of the city. There is no scarcity of funds. We have sufficient funds for the development and no area will be ignored,” he added. TNS

Poppy husk seized

Tarn Taran: Nishan Singh, a resident of Brahampura village, has been arrested with 10 kg of poppy husk by the Chohla Sahib police. ASI Baldev Raj, investigating officer, said a case under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused. OC
