The voices of concern against the Solid Waste Management Plant (SWMP) being set up at Bhagtanwala have once again risen after the recent move by Municipal Corporation Bhatinda to shift a similar plant away from a residential area.

The move came after the MC Bhatinda passed a resolution to purchase land for another site for the Solid Waste Management Plant being run in the area for past eight years after the residents complained of health concerns. “Eventually the authorities had to take the decision to move the plant away from residential area owing to health concerns, which also led to wastage of money in establishing and now shifting of the plant. The residents of Bhagtanwala have been constantly protesting, raising similar concerns and the plant in city is not yet operational. Our MC can take a cue and save public money,” said Sandeep Kurl, a resident of Bhagtanwala and president of Bhagtanwala Sangarsh committee.

The issue has raised its head several times, with residents in constant opposition of the setting up of the plant in the heavily populated area that is close proximity to Golden Temple.
