A local court has ordered Rs 10 lakh compensation in a defamation case filed by a reputed bakery owner against a chartered accounted and his wife in 2014.

In a press conference here on Wednesday, Bakery shop owner Sandeep Bedi, while showing copy of the judgement said that the court also ordered

the couple to pay the amount with an interest of 8 per cent per annum from the date of filing of the suit till actual realisation of the amount.

Bedi, the proprietor of the Blue Bakers located on Circular Road, had filed two separate defamation suits against Vipul Arora, a chartered accountant and his wife Veenu Arora, for posting objectionable and derogatory remarks on social media platform of Facebook. He had filed suits claiming compensation of Rs 10 lakh from each.

The couple had alleged in the FB post that the bakers had delivered dry cakes which were of lesser wait than the ordered by them and that too very late from time given. They had ordered for around 67 dry cakes on the occasion of birthday celebrations of their nephew.

Civil Judge (Senior Division) Ravinderjit Singh Bajwa in the judgement pointed out that though the plaintiff (Bedi) failed to prove the loss of business due to defamatory allegations, but there is also settled principle that there is no hard and fast rule to calculate the same.

“It has to be estimated that the plaintiff must have suffered on account of defamatory allegations made by the defendant and his business and goodwill would have suffered,” the order read.
