A one-week short term course on research methodology was inaugurated at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) here on Tuesday. As many as 47 university and college teachers, including budding research scholars, from various parts of the country are taking part in the course.

Prof AK Thukral, former director research, department of botanical and environmental sciences, presided over the inaugural session.

In his inaugural address he highlighted the paramount significance of this discipline. He opined that data collection, its analysis and correct interpretation are vital components for research, regardless of the discipline one is engaged in.

Expressing his deep concern over the lack of quality research in the country, he said that India, despite being one of the largest producers of doctorates in the world, the present status of research in the country leaves much to be desired. Seeking reasons for this dismal scenario, he emphasised that sufficient incentives for the quality research are lacking bitterly in our country.

“The corporate houses of the country need to rise to the occasion and sponsor quality research in various domains instead of looking only for the commercial gains”, he stressed.

He exhorted the teaching fraternity at large to act as a role model for the society in order to stem the deterioration, creeping very fast in various walks of life.

Prof Kuldeep Kaur, head, Punjab School of Economics and the Course Coordinator, apprised the participants with the thrust area of the course. Prof Jatinder Singh, director, in his welcome address briefed the participants about the history of the centre, which he said, had carved a niche for itself in the realms of higher education in the country ever since its inception.
