Amritsar, July 16

Around 600 cops of different ranks of the Amritsar rural police vowed to adopt villages to combat the menace of drug abuse prevalent in the state. They took pledge to fight against drugs at the Police Lines in Daburji.

They would visit their adopted villages to make a list of the number of drug addicts with their details. Necessary arrangements would be made to provide them treatment. The cops would also identify the drug traffickers operating in the villages.

“The exercise will not only help in creating a database of actual number of drug addicts but also help in identifying the drug traffickers and ensure stern action against them,” said SSP Amritsar (rural) Parampal Singh.

After taking a pledge, the SSP briefed them about the initiative to be taken for making the adopted villages a drug-free village.

While giving details, he said cops would meet respectable and reliable residents of the adopted villages, including panchayat members, women and Drug Abuse Prevention Officers (DAPO) made by the government. They would jot down the information in the performa with the details of the addicts as well as drug peddlers. The cops will also seek information about the anti-social elements and the population of the village, he added.

Information of religious places located in the villages would also be made and they would also observe whether CCTV cameras were installed at designated places or not.

It is worth mentioning here that a youth had died recently after he injected himself with drugs in the washroom of a gurdwara in Jandiala Guru.

The SSP said the cops would visit their adopted villages on Saturday and Sunday while they would update their records on a daily basis. “They would report to SHOs, DSP and SPs rank officials about daily developments. I will also supervise the functioning of the cops,” he said.
