Three persons of a family have been booked for dowry death after a young woman died in Talwandi Nahar village on Saturday evening. Though her in-laws said she died of cardiac arrest, her kin accused them of murdering her for dowry.

The victim has been identified as Ramandeep Kaur (23). Acting on the complaint lodged by her father Satnam Singh, a resident of Jandiala Guru, the police have booked Ramandeep’s husband Sandeep Singh and two others.

No arrest has been made so far as the matter is under investigation, said Iqbal Singh, SHO, Jhander police station. He said the police were awaiting the autopsy report to ascertain the exact reason behind the death.

The SHO said, “Though her in-laws claim that she died of cardiac arrest, the circumstantial evidence suggests that it is not the case.”

The deceased’s father, Satnam Singh, said it was a love marriage. Sandeep and Ramandeep solemnised marriage after eloping. After a couple of years, Ramandeep and her family reconciled following which she started visiting her parents. “She had been telling us that her husband and in-laws assaulted her for dowry. On Saturday, I received a call from his relative Manjit Singh, who is also known to her in-laws, that Ramandeep was not well. Within 15 minutes, I received another call from him about her death,” he said. He, along with some relatives, reached her house and found her dead. He alleged that there were injury marks on her body indicating that she was assaulted.

“They beat her to death. Her neighbours informed that they had been hearing the family quarreling for the past five days,” he added.

The police have registered a case under Sections 304-B and 34 of the IPC.
