The city police have booked three persons, including two women, for allegedly duping a local resident on the pretext of getting him settled in the USA. The complainant alleged that the accused were his relatives who defrauded him of Rs 8 lakh.

Those booked have been identified as Harpreet Singh of Guru Amardass Nagar, his wife Harsimran Kaur and their relative Narinder Kaur.

Complainant Charanjit Singh said Harpreet Singh and his wife visited him in February last year and informed that Narinder’s daughter was well settled in the US. They allegedly promised to provide him a US visa within three months through her.

He alleged that the accused took Rs 8 lakh in cash, his passport, identity proofs and photographs for completing the formalities. Upon getting no response in three months, he approached them who informed him that his visa hadn’t been approved. After that, he demanded his money, but they did not return.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) JS Walia said a probe was marked to ACP Surinder Singh in this regard. He said appropriate action would be taken against the suspects after the completion of the probe.

The police have registered a case under Sections 420 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against them while further investigation is under way.
