3 arrested with illegal firearm

The police arrested three persons for possessing illegal firearms on Thursday evening. At the time of their arrest, one of them jumped from the Beas river bridge to evade police action. He sustained injuries. They were were going towards Jalandhar side on a bike when they were intercepted at a checkpoint on the bridge following a tip-off.

The accused have been identified as Gurmit Singh of Phailoke village, Jagrup Singh of Tarn taran and Karamjit Singh Sarhali. The police seized a .315-bore pistol with one live cartridge and a toy pistol from their possession. A case under the Arms Act was registered against them.

According to information, a police team was deputed at a checkpoint when they got information that three youths, carrying illegal firearms, were going towards Jalandhar on a bike. The police team intercepted the three at around 2.30 am. When the police were frisking them, Gurmit Singh jumped from the Beas river bridge, but landed on concrete ground, sustaining severe injuries.

He was admitted to a hospital for treatment. Further investigation is under way.
