Amritsar, October 15

Even 24 hours have passed, the police are yet to arrest the culprits who had shot at Arshdeep Singh, a BCA student, of Guru Nanak Dev Univesrity college campus at Verka.

The incident took place near Verka Chowk on the Amritsar-Attari bypass road. He, along with Gurshehbaz Singh, who is the current president of the students union, was going to the Majitha road bypass chowk in a car when the accused intercepted and attacked them.

The armed men started beating up Gurshebaz Singh. Arshdeep tried to intervene and rescue him. However, the accused fired a gun shot and the bullet hit Arshdeep. He was critically injured and rushed to a private hospital, where his condition is stated to be critical.

A dispute over the president-ship of the students union on the Guru Nanak Dev University college campus at Verka is stated to be the reason behind the incident. Students of the college campus had unanimously elected Gurshehbaz Singh as the president. However, this had not gone down well with Sukh Bhullar who wanted to be the president of the students union, although he and his accomplices are outsiders and not the students of the college, the police said.

Police officer Nishan Singh, who is investigating the case, said Arshdeep had undergone a surgery and as per doctors, he was still serious.

Among those booked on attempt to murder charges include a former councillor’s son, identified as Sukhraj Singh alias Sukh Bhullar.

Among others who were booked include Jaskirat Singh alias Chhota Lala of Bal Kalan village and Gagan Saini besides several unknown persons. They escaped from the scene after the incident. — TNS
