Amritsar, June 25

Yet another surprise raid on the Amritsar Central Jail premises led to the seizure of as many as 22 mobile phones. Five of them were found from three jail inmates. They were identified as Amritpal Singh of Sarawan village in Faridkot, Darshan Singh of Gobind Nagar, Chaura Bazaar, and Sunil Kohli of Gulmohar Avenue, on the Majitha road, here.

According to information, the jail authorities recovered five cell phones from their possession during the raid while the remaining 17 phones were found abandoned on other parts of the jail premises.

Following a complaint lodged by the Jail Superintendent, the police have registered a case under Section 420 of the Indian Penal code (IPC) in addition to the Sections 42 and 52-A of the Prisoners Act.

The Amritsar Central Jail has the maximum number of seizures of mobile phones in the past over nine months and it is owing to a continuous surprise checking by the authorities. Though the jail administration took many steps to nail the problem, unabated seizure of cell phones has been a big challenge for the authorities.

The jail authorities said they had been taking every possible measure to stem the problem of sneaking of mobile phones into the jail. More sophisticated equipment and mobile signal jammers were also required to put a complete end to the menace.
