2 arrested for attacking cops

Two persons were arrested for attacking policemen on duty at the Harike police station, 35 km from here, on last night. The accused have been identified as Balwinder Singh and his son Jatinderjit Singh of Pangota village.

A case under Sections 353, 332, 186 and 34 of the IPC was registered against the accused.

Sub-Inspector Nachhatar Singh, who investigating the matter, said the accused under the influence of liquor entered the police station last night and exchanged heated arguments with Amarjit Singh, a jawan of the Punjab Home Guard (PHG), who was on duty at the gate.

The accused alleged that the police were harassing innocent people of the area. At the same time, Amarjit advised them to come to the police station to talk to the SHO in the morning. In a fit of rage, the accused attacked him, the SI added.

When Head Constable Jaspal Singh came to the rescue of Amarjit, the accused attacked him as well. The medical examination of the accused confirmed that they were under the influence of liquor.— OC
