17-year-old fails to crack exam, commits suicide

Upset over his failure to crack a competitive examination, a 17-year-old youth from Rani Ka Bagh area committed suicide by jumping into the Beas on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Rohan Kumar, son of a senior bank officer. According to family members, Rohan had appeared for a competitive examination, but failed to get the expected rank. Upset over the result, he took the extreme step.

Rohan had left the house on his Activa scooter around 8 am on Monday. Family members made every effort to locate him. They also spread information on social media as well.

Amrik Singh, Station House Office of the Beas police station, said, “We had received a complaint regarding Roahn on Monday afternoon. We initiated a search operation on the bank of the river. During the operation, we found an Activa scooter parked under the railway bridge on the Beas. We matched the registration number and informed about it to the family.”

Divers made efforts to search the body and on Tuesday morning, they managed to recover the body.

The Station House Office said, “After conducting a post-mortem examination, the body has been handed over to the family. A preliminary investigation has revealed that he committed suicide due to the stress of not getting the expected rank in a joint entrance test. On the statement of Rohan’s father, we have initiated the proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.”
