City-based educators said there was a need to promote traditional languages such as Sanskrit and Urdu to develop interest in children for these.

There has been a craze to learn foreign languages in various age groups, unlike the traditional ones. These languages have been losing their sheen, especially in youngsters. Languages preserve art, culture and connecting people. Laying stress on promoting language through the use of media, poetry and other communication tools, principal of Shri Ram Ashram Public School Vinodita Sankhyan said: “I remember watching a programme on DD long ago that influenced me to develop a liking for Urdu. I believe poetry has to be promoted to develop interest in the language.” She laid stress on the importance of reading, too.

Elaborating on the need to create opportunities in the language, principal of DAV International School Anjana Gupta said: “The requirement is to create job opportunities with a focus on these languages. The system itself has been asking student to make a choice between languages. In such conditions, preference is given to languages which have better scope.”

The district Language authorities had also been holding Urdu learning classes at free of cost from time to time basis for residents. The aim is to help them learn the language. Many open mic events are being held in city to promote poetry in other languages, too.
