A day after the body of a woman was found at a vacant plot in the Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar area, the police have booked an alleged ‘quack’ on the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Preliminary probe pointed out that the victim had undergone an abortion. Some complications had developed thereafter leading to her death. The victim was later identified as Amanjit Kaur, a resident of Jalausma village. Her body was wrapped in a bed sheet and dumped in an open ground.

Following initial probe the police had booked Dr Maan, who resides in the Kot Mit Singh area. The victim’s mother told the police that she was married and had a child from the same. She had marital dispute with her husband therefore living separately from him in a rented accommodation at Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar for the last four years.

She told that the victim came in contact with Maan around two months ago, who used to visit her regularly. Later, she got pregnant. On Saturday the accused got her abortion done at his clinic in Chabba village, the victim’s mother alleged. She said her daughter’s health deteriorated thereafter. She alleged that the accused dumped her body with the help of unknown accomplices.

The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, JS Walia, said a case under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 313 (causing miscarriage without woman’s consent), 314 (death caused by an act done with intent to cause miscarriage), 201 (destruction of evidence), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC had been  registered against Maan. He said raids were on to arrest him.

He said the case was registered following the statement of victim’s mother and the postmortem examination. “We are still ascertaining the role of Maan. The situation would be clear after his arrest,” he added.
