Blaming the government policies for dismal results of Class XII examination, former health minister and senior BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla has said teachers of government schools shouldn’t be assigned any task other than teaching.

She said teachers were being assigned duties regarding enrolling voters, making corrections in the voters’ list, conducting surveys and other tasks that were not a part of their duty. “Teachers hardly get time to teach as they are busy throughout the year. It will be better if they are left free only to teach. The government can have other employees to do other work,” said Chawla.

“Merely recording adverse remarks in the annual reports of the teachers cannot improve the education system in the state. More teachers should be appointed and their primary job should be educating the students,” she said.

Most of the students in the merit list of the Punjab School Education Board were from private schools and even the pass percentage of private schools was much higher than the government schools.
