Batala youth booked for raping Class XII student on pretext of marriage

A teenage girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped by a Batala youth after luring her for marriage. The victim came in contact with the suspect through Instagram around two months ago.

The police have registered an FIR under Sections 363, 366, 376 and 506 of the IPC and Section 4 of the POCSO Act though no arrest has been made in connection till now. The suspect was identified as Manoj Kumar, a resident of Panj Garaiya in Batala.

The victim, a 12th standard student of a government senior secondary school, told the police that she had been active on Instagram for past one year. She said the suspect came into contact with her on Instagram around two months ago and they became friends. She said on February 7, the suspect called her and said he would be coming to take her away. The victim alleged that though she refused, the suspect started threatening her and said he would consume poison in front of her house. The victim said she got afraid and agreed to his demand.

She said on the intervening night of February 7 and 8, the suspect came and took her away on a bike to his friend’s house in Kathunangal where he tried to make physical relations with her, but she opposed. The victim said next day, the suspect took her to Tugalwal village where he forcibly made physical relations with her and assured that he would marry her. She said on February 9, he made her sit in a Batala-bound bus with a promise to meet her at the Golden Temple. The victim alleged that she waited for the suspect, but he did not turn up and switched off his mobile phone.

The police said an investigation was in progress and raids were on to nab the suspect.
