Amritsar, January 21

The Vigilance Bureau nabbed an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) while accepting a bribe of Rs10,000 on Tuesday. The arrested ASI was identified as Mehal Singh, who is posted as in charge of Thora police post in Tarn Taran.

Kuldip Singh, DSP (Vigilance Bureau), Tarn Taran, said the ASI demanded bribe from a mahant of a local dera to help him reach a compromise with the rival party in a case.

Complainant Baldev Singh Mahant told the police that he had been serving in Dera Thakaran Da, Noordi Adda, Tarn Taran, since childhood. He was attacked by his sister-in-law Surjit Kaur and her son Yadwinder Singh, who also resided in the same dera, leaving him injured.

He lodged a complaint with the police, seeking action against the suspects. Later, he received a call from the ASI, who put pressure on him to strike a compromise with the suspects. Baldev alleged the ASI also demanded bribe from him to help in compromise. He said his friend then talked to the ASI over phone and the policeman demanded a bribe of Rs10,000.

On the statement of Baldev Singh, the police had registered a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act against the ASI.
