Sham Singh Attariwala remembered

The 178th death anniversary of Sikh General Sardar Sham Singh Attariwala was observed at India Gate and Attari Samadh at Attari village on Saturday. Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and Attari MLA Jaswinder Singh Ramdas paid tributes at the monument of the General Sham Singh Attariwala built at India Gate, Naraingarh. Dhaliwal announced Rs 15 lakh for development of Attari village.

In his address, he said that the museum built at the monument would be made bigger and pictures of generals of Sikh history will also be installed in the museum. “It is necessary that we tell our children about these generals, thanks to whom we are breathing in freedom today. These warriors are part of our glorious history and we should keep their memories alive through their stories,” he said.

Recalling the bravado of Sham Singh Attariwala, he said the bravery with which Sham Singh Attariwala fought the British forces on February 10, 1846, is an example in itself. He said that the martyrdom of General Sham Singh Attariwala became a source of inspiration for the coming generations.

He said Attari village would be given a new look so that tourists, who come to see the retreat ceremony, can visit Attariwala’s samadh and know about his history.

The Kirtani Singhs sang Guru Jas and the Dhadi Jathas shared the story of General Sham Singh Attariwala’s life and martyrdom with the congregation. On the occasion, Sham Singh Attariwala’s family members were also honoured.
