Safai sewaks hold protest in Tarn Taran

Tarn Taran: Safai sewaks and sewermen under the banner of Safai Sewak Union, Punjab, organised a protest against the Municipal Council(MC) here today. The protesters were demanding release of their pending salaries for the last three months. They warned the MC that if their salaries were not paid immediately they would intensify their agitation in the coming days. Romesh Kumar Shergill, Pardeep Kumar, Bakhshish Singh and other leaders of the union, alleged that they had been demanding the release of their salaries but the authorities were not ready to give them positive hearing.The leaders said due to the non-payment of salary they were facing great hardships. The leaders also alleged that the MC was not depositing employees' share of contribution i.e.EPF money to EPFO. Kanwaljit Singh, Executive Officer of the Municipal Council, claimed that the civic body had released the salary to safai sewaks on Thursday, which the safai sewaks called it incorrect. OC

Lahan, illicit liquor seized

Amritsar: Yet another raid at Khiala Kalan village falling under the Lopoke police station here led to the recovery of illicit liquor and 'lahan' from the village. This was third raid at the village while 10th in the rural belt in past one and a half months. The police confiscated 30 litre of illicit liquor, 3150-kg 'lahan' and an electric running still besides 27 drums during the raid at the residence of Ranjit Singh who was nabbed by the police in the operation. This is for the second time that an electric running still has been seized by the police. The police have also found usage of LPG gas cylinders for easy and fast processing in manufacturing of illicit liquor. The police officials said that the properties of bootleggers nabbed during one and a half months were being identified which would be freezed after valuation from competent authority. TNS
