Rs 40K bribe: Doc on the run

Tarn Taran: The Vigilance Bureau arrested two pharmacists from the Khemkaran Civil Hospital while accepting a bribe of Rs40,000 from a person on Thursday. A medical officer who was also involved, managed to flee. The accused has been been identified as Dr Kanwartaj Singh (MO), pharmacist Suresh Kumar and Sukhpal Singh. The VB officials said complainant Sham Singh of Bhura Kona, who had a property dispute with Gurnam Singh of Mehindipur, alleged that the latter had attacked his father Jaswant Singh and younger brother on April 11 leaving them injured seriously. Sham said he admitted the duo at the Khemkaran Civil Hospital, from where they were referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar. Sham wanted to get MLR from the Khemkaran Civil Hospital where the pharmacist Suresh demanded a bribe of Rs30,000 in the name of Medical Officer Dr Kanwartaj Singh. Sham gave Rs20,000 on the spot and the remaining amount the next day. The accused inspite of releasing the MLR to the complainant, demanded Rs40,000 more. Sham informed the Vigilance Bureau officials in Amritsar, which laid a trap at the Khemkaran Civil Hospital. The accused have been booked under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988 and Section 120-B of the IPC. OC

One held with 500-gram heroin

Tarn Taran: The CIA team led by SI Satnam Singh arrested a person from border village Bhuse on Thursday. SSP Dhruman H Nimbale said the accused Lakhwinder Singh of Khehra was booked under Sections 21 and 25 of the NDPS Act by Sarai Amanat Khan police. The recovered consignment was worth Rs2.5 crore in international market, according to reports. OC

Proclaimed offender held

Amritsar: The police have arrested a proclaimed offender who has been identified as Karamjit Singh, alias Mana, of Loharkra Road. He had come out of jail on parole and was to return in April, however, he did not go back and the court declared him a PO. Kamboh SHO Yaadwinder Singh said Mana was convicted by the court for murder of a Kabaddi player who was killed in June 2011. He said he recently came out on parole, but failed to return. Therefore, he was arrested. TNS

Cops pulled up for inaction

Tarn Taran: Raj Kumar Hans, member of the state SC Commission, on Thursday visited Fatehbad village and ordered the Goindwal Sahib police to register a case under the SC/ST Act against the accused responsible for torturing a Dalit girl. Anu, the victim of the SC community, had alleged that she was tied with a rope and tortured by the person where she was working as a domestic help. The victim said she had lodged her complaint with the Goindwal Sahib police which took no action. Raj Kumar ordered police to register a case under the SC/ST Act and submit report on May 10 at his Chandigarh office. OC
