Unknown armed assailants fired at former gangster Ranbir Singh, alias Rana Kandowalia, when he was returning home on his car after hearing in a murder bid case in a Tarn Taran court on Wednesday evening.

The police suspect that the incident could be an outcome of gang rivalry. It is suspected that members of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang had shot at Rana Kandowalia and his accomplices though the police have registered a case against unknown persons for now.

Kandowalia alleged that he was returning after attending a hearing in the Tarn Taran court. He said a Maruti Suzuki Swift car came before his car and suddenly stopped in the middle of road near Manawala. He said three persons one of which was wearing red cap came out and fired indiscriminately at his car. He said he narrowly escaped in the attempt. He said his friends resorted to retaliatory firing following which the accused fled.

He took his car to Amritsar rural police lines where senior officials also reached and started probe. The police have registered a case under Sections 307, 427 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act against unidentified assailants.

Meanwhile, concerned over the repeated incidents of robbery and firing in the Jandiala guru area in the recent past, the rural police have strengthened the police force and intensified patrolling the barricaded the area.

Vikram Jeet Duggal, SSP Amritsar rural, visited various nakas which would function ork 24X7. He said police parties would be deputed on 12-hour shifts.
