Amritsar, February 26
On the second day of the Nutan International Theatre Festival, a play on one of the female Assamese poets was staged at Virsa Vihar here on Wednesday. Titled Bogi Zari, the play was staged by Assam-based Dharam Trust Theatre group. It was directed and written by Barnali Maidi.
Poet Bogi Zari was born in a tribal family of the king of the Raba tribe in the 16th century in Assam. A true definition of female empowerment at her time, Bogi Zari took inspiration from nature to pen down poems and folk songs that hold relevance in the Assamese society and culture till date.
She was supported by her parents in her passion to pursue writing and she took the court poet of the Cooch region as her husband. Though the two did not belong to the same community and caste, they fell in love.
A brief synopsis on the life and inspiration in her life, the play highlighted the challenges she faced as a female writer and the issues she took up through her literary works.— TNS
