Amritsar, November 27

Ever since its inception in 2008, Pangoora, a shelter home for infants abandoned by their biological parents here, has welcomed 172 babies.

The recent addition to Pangoora was a newborn boy left inside the cradle at the home by an unidentified person. The boy was found around 11.30 pm on November 20 and was immediately taken to Parvati Devi Hospital for medical examination.

Anamjot Kaur, Assistant Commissioner (General), completed the process of sending the child to the Swami Ganga Nand Bhuriwale Foundation Home under the LAPA scheme.

She said most children received at Pangoora have been sent to the foundation for the adoption process. “Pangoora acts as an immediate shelter-cum-rescue home for these abandoned children and with assistance of the District Red Cross Society, the medical examinations are done. Pangoora has so far received 172 infants, with 145 girls and 27 boys. Though the number of girls is higher, given the social taboos regarding the girl child, these children are kept in a safe environment till they are adopted.” The registration for adoption is done through www.care.nic.in.
