Contractual sanitation workers of the local municipal council went on an indefinite strike here on Tuesday. The strike is being held in protest against not releasing their monthly salaries for the last five months.
The workers’ strike caused cleanliness problem in the town. The sanitation workers came to their duties this morning and sat on a dharna in the complex of the municipal council with brooms in their hands.
Dhira, Vishal, Ninki and others leaders of sanitation workers alleged that they had been demanding their salaries for months, but no one came to pay heed to their genuine grievance.
The leaders said they approached the local MLA and other officials, but nothing concrete was done to resolve their problem.
The leaders stressed that their agitation would continue till justice was given to them. They said they had been demanding the regularisation of their services by releasing them appointment letter as the workers of the municipal council at present were workers of a private company. They alleged there was no detail of the amount deduced as EPF from their salaries.
Dharampal Singh, Executive Officer (EO) of the MC, said the demands of the agitating workers were genuine, but the municipal council was not capable of releasing their salaries of five months in one go.
He said the administration had offered to release two-month salary of 133 agitating sanitation workers and the rest would be released afterward in turn. The EO said the process of giving them appointment letters would be initiated soon.
‘Will continue agitation till demands met’
The leaders said their agitation would continue till justice was given to them.
