MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney announces grant for restoration of century old Hindu College

Rajya Sabha member Vikramjit Singh Sahney announced a grant of Rs 25 lakh for installation of a solar power system and restoration of the century old Hindu College. Addressing the annual convocation, he said the college had a tremendous legacy, having produced eminent alumni, including former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh, Supreme Court Justice Hans Raj Khanna, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, former captain of cricket team Bishan Singh Bedi, two badminton champions and Arjuna Awardees Dinesh Khanna and Davinder Ahuja and many other stalwarts. The college was establish in 1924 and has achieved distinctions in several fields. It is one of the two oldest educational institutions in the city, the other being Khalsa College.

Sahney said the college has been the seat of education since pre-independence times and many a revolutions were born on its campus. Principal Rakesh Joshi shared the MP had also promised Rs 10 lakh for carrying out restoration and conservation work at the college.

Sahney also honoured distinguished alumni, including former national badminton champion Davinder Ahuja, former rotary governor and secretary of Institute for the Blind Arun Kapur, Vice-President Jagran Group of Publication Shailender Jately, President Punjab Beopar Mandal PL Seth and leading industrialist Vinod Khurana. Sahney said the budding graduates had a great opportunity to build promising careers in any field they desired but they must retain their innate goodness and remain good human beings.

Punjab Pollution Control Board Chairman Adarsh Pal Vij, who was the guest of honour, said it was very important to protect the environment as nature and its numerous bounties provide us all the comforts we want. He said the students should follow a disciplined life.

College Development Council Dean Saroj Bala congratulated the students on receiving their degrees and wished them all the best for their careers and life.
