Amritsar, February 24

A day after a man died under mysterious circumstances in the Gumtala area, residents and family members of the deceased staged a demonstration against the police for not registering an FIR in this regard here on Monday.

They said deceased Gurmej Singh, a labourer, was beaten to death by some bootleggers, who were active in the area. The police on Sunday initiated action under the CrPC saying that appropriate action would be taken after receiving the autopsy report.

ACP Dev Dutt Sharma reached the spot and pacified the protesters. He said the statement of the victim’s family members was being taken and the body had been handed over them after the postmortem examination.

Alleging police inaction and demanding an FIR, the family members staged a protest outside the Gumtala police chowki with the body.

Deceased’s brother Harinder Singh said Gurmej used to consume liquor after buying it from those who were involved in selling illicit liquor in the area. He said for some days, he had a dispute with them. On Saturday, they thrashed his brother, who did not return home. He said on Sunday, his brother’s body was found near the house.
