Amritsar, September 22

The first-ever International University Sports Day was celebrated at Khalsa College of Physical Education (KCPE) here on Tuesday as per the directions of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University (PSU), Patiala. A friendly hockey match between the students of GNDU and the Khalsa Hockey Academy was played on the college’s ground to mark the occasion.

“The day is celebrated world over under the aegis of International University Sports Federation (FISU), a Russia-based body that aims to encourage university sports at international level. The motive behind organising and celebrating the event was to highlight the importance of sports on university campuses and in general,” informed Dr Kanwaljit Singh, principal, Khalsa College of Physical Education.

He thanked PSU VC Lt Gen Jagbir Singh Cheema (retd) for choosing the college campus for organising the event. He said the newly formed university under the leadership of Cheema aimed to promote sports culture in Punjab and outside apart from the focus upon sports education. Renowned hockey coach Baldev Singh and others were present during the match.
