Amritsar, November 30

Earth Day Network, India, a chapter of Earth Day Network, along with the IHA Foundation has declared the District Library, Amritsar, winner for its initiatives to promote environmental literacy in the city. The Earth Day Network, one of the largest global networks for environmental movement, had in March this year collaborated with the District Library for local operations.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shivdular Singh Dhillon awarded certificate to Librarian Prabhjot Sandhu for the commendable feat.

Running campaign against plastic use and for adopting green and clean lifestyle, the two NGOs had collaborated extensively throughout the year with the library to carry out awareness programmes. “The library has been running the environment literacy programme through interactive workshops, demonstrations and conducting school and college visits. We had also held a book exhibition on the subject related to environment-friendly lifestyle. The collaboration with the two global NGOs had stressed the need to protect the environment and our first activity is held on Sikh Environment Day celebrated in June every year,” said Prabhjot Sandhu.

IHA Foundation partnered with Earth Day Network, headed in India by Karuna A Singh, for the awareness programmes and subsequent implementation work for several environmental issues including air pollution, discouraging plastic use and saving water resources. Earth Day Network runs over 75,000 partnerships in the field of environmental activities world over.

The library too has been running environment programmes for the readers and members. ‘We declared our premises plastic free and also encouraged our readers and members to do plantation and rainwater harvesting. We wish to continue the collaboration and plan more awareness activities for future,” said Sandhu.
