Full dress rehearsal for R-Day celebrations

A full dress rehearsal for the Republic Day celebrations was held at Guru Nanak Dev Stadium here on Friday. Commissioner of Police Dr Sukhchain Gill was present on the occasion and Deputy Commissioner Shivdular Singh hoisted the Tricolour and inspected the parade.

Deputy Commissioner Shivdular Singh said schoolchildren, teachers, administrative and government officials participated as they prepared for the main event on the Republic Day. In line with the format of celebrations, parade and cultural programmes comprising patriotic songs and Punjabi folk dances were also performed. The DC said Cabinet Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria would hoist the national flag on the day.

Meanwhile, schools too organised a rehearsal for the celebrations ahead of January 26. DAV International School celebrated the 71st Republic Day by hosting colourful and patriotic performances by students on the school premises. The young talent presented patriotic songs and enacted a skit to highlight the contribution of the revolutionary leader Lala Lajpat Rai, who worked tirelessly for the welfare of society. “He was known as ‘The Lion of Punjab’ and his brave acts and contribution in the freedom struggle would always remain eternal. Children were dressed in beautiful attires,” said Dr Anjana Gupta, principal.

She said the day was associated with the honour of the country as on this day India was declared as a sovereign, secular, socialist and a democratic Republic. She urged the students to value the hard-earned freedom and stay united.

Students of Shri Ram Ashram School too held a special assembly which began with an explanation of all the six fundamental rights through a role play. The father of the Indian Constitution, Dr B R Ambedkar, was also remembered by the students during the session. “The real Constitution was hand-written by Prem Behari Narain Raizada in italic calligraphy and its original copy is still preserved in the library of Parliament House in Helium-filled cases,” shared the students while addressing the assembly.

School Principal Vinodita Sankhyan shared her views with the students and asked them to maintain peace and harmony and to remember the sacrifices of our great leaders.
