Experts and senior officials of the Water Resources (Irrigation) Department have laid stress on using canal water judiciously, going for rainwater harvesting system and minimising the wastage of water if we are to conserve water for future. These measures would also help recharge groundwater.

Among others, Krishan Kumar, Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department, also addressed the seminar held on recharging groundwater table and water conservation here on Saturday.

He said 117 out of a total of 150 blocks in the state were announced as dark zones. It meant that water had been overexploited in these zones. He said the condition was very sensitive in Sangrur and Barnala districts of the Malwa region.

Experts also aired their views on different measures to prevent further depletion of the groundwater table.
