Amritsar, June 27

Workers of the Congress under the leadership of former Deputy Chief Minister Om Parkash Soni and Lok Sabha member Gurjeet Singh Aujla on Monday staged a protest outside the Hall Gate to oppose the Agnipath scheme of the Central Government for recruitment in the armed forces.

While criticizing the Central Government, Congress leaders stated that the new recruitment scheme was an exploitation of the vast numbers of unemployed youth in the country.

Aujla said most of the recruits in the armed forces, especially in the non-officers category, come from the farming community. He alleged it seems that the Centre was trying to punish the farming community for their agitation against the three farm laws which the Centre had to repeal.

Congress leaders, including OP Soni, demanded that the government should scrap the Agnipath scheme and youth should be given permanent employment in the Army.
