Book on semiotics of films released

Guru Nanak Dev University’s School of Punjabi Studies today held a ceremony to release Ranjit Singh Bajwa’s book “Semiotics of Films and Fantasies”.

Initiating the discussion on the book, Manjinder Singh, head, School of Punjabi Studies, said this book had set new horizons in the field of Punjabi film criticism and in future this book would serve as a source for Punjabi film critique.

Dr Sarabjot Singh Behl, Dean, Academic Affairs, said the book was an innovative piece of work that had been done to present the literary analysis of films from the point of view of symbolism.

Speaking about his book, Bajwa shared his experience of writing the book and said the book was a product of seven years worth of research and analysis.

Dr Dharam Singh, another scholar of Punjabi, said the films these days were devoid of intellect, something that was abundantly enjoyed in the cinema of yester years. “As a scholarly piece, the book has lot of insight into what goes behind the camera and in front of it. It will also serve as a potential subject for scientific analysis of films for students to reveal more opportunities,” he said. He also requested Bajwa to undertake a serious study on Punjabi art films, which is a genre lost in oblivion.
