Gurjeet Singh Aujla urges govt to design foolproof system against drugs, submits memo to DC to be forwarded to CM

Amritsar Member Parliament Gurjeet Singh Aujla on Monday urged Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to design a foolproof system to generate intelligence, detect and disrupt organised drug trafficking in the border state.

He said this was also needed to nail criminal groups, gangsters and extortionists. He along with several other Congress leaders submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner to be forwarded to the Chief Minister in this connection on Monday.

He also suggested the Chief Minister to disband the inefficient units of the state police, including CID, intelligence agencies and form new modernised units in case they have to depend on people for providing information. He said inter-agency cooperation and intelligence sharing must be ensured to eradicate the drug menace from Punjab.

“It is pained to learn that the land of valour and intellect was being tarnished as a den of drug addicts and extortionists,” he said. He claimed that the state has witnessed a sharp increase in instances of smuggling of the contraband, arms and ammunition.

He said the number of drug related deaths have also risen. He said the recent spurt in drug and gun-related crimes pointed out that organised crime control unit and anti-drug campaigns of the Punjab Police was nothing but farce.
