Amritsar East MLA Jeevan Jyot Kaur directs officials to ensure cleanliness of sewers & open drains

Amritsar East MLA Jeevan Jyot Kaur held a meeting with senior officials of the Amritsar Municipal Corporation on Wednesday and reviewed development works.

In view of the upcoming monsoon season and waterlogging issue in the city, the MC officials were directed to carry out the work of cleaning the ewerage chamber, sewer lines and open drainage on a priority. While interacting with the MC officials, she said it was common to see water accumulating on city roads during the rainy season due to improper functioning of sewer system. Now, the monsoon season is just round the corner and there is possibility of waterlogging in several low-lying areas in the city.

“In view of the rainy season, the sewer system of the city should be streamlined immediately. Wherever desilting or cleaning is necessary, the MC should conduct it on a priority. Blockage of sewerage will not be tolerated at any cost,” the East MLA said.

She instructed the MC officials to check breeding of mosquitoes and insects. It could lead to the outbreak of any disease such as malaria or dengue. Moreover, rainwater accumulation can cause waterborne diseases.

Expressing concern over the health of residents, she directed the authorities to take immediate steps to control mosquitoes and other pests and prevent accumulation of rainwater anywhere in the city.

Jivan Jyot also asked officials to take necessary steps for uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water. “The cleaning of sewerage chambers and drains is must. In case of any problem faced by common man, it would be the personal responsibility of the officer concerned,” she warned.

“Being elected representative of the people, it is my responsibility to provide clean air, water and a healthy society to people and I would fulfil this responsibility diligently,” Jivan Jyot said.

Officers present on the occasion assured that no one would face any inconvenience during the rainy season in the city.
