Amritsar: Despite cow cess, stray cattle menace continues

Despite the state government charging cow cess from the residents, there seems to be no plan in place to solve the stray animals’ problem in the holy city.

The stray animals, especially cows and bulls, can be roaming on the roads in the city. Even in the busiest of the markets in city, the stray cows can be seen sitting on the road and blocking the passage for the traffic.

The residents said apart from charging levy from the residents for the welfare of the cows, the government is doing nothing to tackle the issue. “The government is charging cess from the residents for the past many years, but no noticeable reduction in the number of stray animals roaming on the roads has been seen,” said a resident, Kewal Ram. He added that the stray cattle population was increasing with each passing year.

Stray animals feeding on garbage heaps is a common sight in the city. Stray cattle can be seen more around fruit and vegetable shops as vendors throw rotten vegetables and fruits on the roads.

The residents demanded that a solution to the problem of the stray cattle should be found and all these animals should be shifted to cow shelters. The city has at least three cow shelters run by religious organisations, but animals can still be seen on the roads. The residents said the government must create more cow shelters so that the accidents caused by them on the roads could be checked.
