Ahead of survey, Amritsar MC officials to ensure waste segregation at source

On the directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Municipal Health Officer Dr Kiran Kumar held a meeting with the Chief Sanitary Inspector, the Sanitary Inspectors and officials of the solid waste management company, Avarda, to collect the segregated garbage from houses.

As per the directions of the NGT, there should be 100 per cent source segregation of garbage. The MC has asked the company workers to ensure collection of 100 per cent segregated wet and dry waste from the houses and it is necessary to have a provision for keeping wet and dry waste separately in the vehicles.

On the instructions of Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Kumar Saurabh Raj, Municipal Health Officer Dr Kiran Kumar asked the sanitary inspectors to keep a close watch on the garbage collection in each ward and to ensure source segregation.

The MC officials asked the sanitation workers to distribute the bins in those areas where separate bins had not been distributed yet to keep dry and wet waste separately.

Dr Kiran Kumar said heaps of garbage lying on the dumping ground at Bhagtanwala would also be removed. He asked the personnel of Avarda company to speed up the bioremediation of garbage lying at Bhagtanwala.

The officials claimed that these parameters of the Swachh Bharat Mission should be met before the visit of Central teams for the nationwide cleanliness ranking survey.

Giving directions to the Chief Sanitary Inspectors and the Sanitary Inspectors, MHO Kiran Kumar said the cleanliness ranking of Amritsar city should be improved by fulfilling the parameters of the Swachh Bharat Mission at the earliest. He asked all the officials to prepare a daily pro forma of their respective areas. Besides, challans should be issued against spreading filth, single-use plastic, burning garbage and breeding of dengue larvae.
