Amritsar: 5 ex-panchayat members held for bungling Rs 1.67 cr

The Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested five former panchayat members of Benka village in Tarn Taran district for allegedly misappropriating government grant received for the development of the village.

Those arrested were identified as Gurmej Singh and Jawala Singh, both former sarpanches, and Nirvail Singh, Kabul Singh and Gurbir Singh, all former members of the village panchayat.

A VB spokesman said a case was registered against former panchayat members on a complaint filed by Shubeg Singh, a resident of Benka village.

The spokesman said during investigation, it was found that the five suspects had embezzled government funds amounting to Rs. 1.67 crore during their tenure as members of Benka village panchayat.

A case was registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act at the VB police station, Amritsar range. Further investigation was in progress, the spokesman said.
