3 challaned for selling single-use plastic items in Amritsar

Health wing of the Municipal Corporation seized single-use plastic items and issued challans to three shops in the wholesale market of plastic at Katra Bagian in the city.

Even after the government’s ban, single-use plastic goods are still being sold by wholesale shopkeepers. Municipal Health Officer Dr Kiran Kumar and his team conducted a raid in Katra Bagian wholesale market.

Dr Kumar said during checking, it was found that single-use plastic and thermacol items were still being sold by shopkeepers. He said goods were seized from three shops and challans were issued. Earlier, in a meeting, the health officials warned shopkeepers to not sell single-use plastic items.

The health official said according to guidelines of Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and MC Commissioner Kumar Saurab Raj, a team of the corporation’s health department would continue the campaign.

It has been learnt that goods worth thousands of rupees of three shopkeepers were seized and later disposed. These shopkeepers were also fined up to Rs 3,000. As per the instructions, if they are found selling single-use plastic items again, the amount of penalty would be increased to Rs 10,000. “If the shopkeepers still do not stop, the health department of the MC along with the officials of the pollution control board will register a case against the sellers of single-use plastic and thermocol goods,” said Dr Kumar.

Penalty up for violating ban again

As per the instructions, if they are found selling single-use plastic items again, the amount of penalty will be increased to Rs 10,000 from Rs 3,000.
